365 Project. Day 120, April 30: My cat is messing with me. I've mentioned that Jasmine is 20, which, in people years, is -- well, let's just say that the chart I just consulted on the Purina website only goes up to 19, which is equivalent to 92 in human years. So we're talking OLD. At this point, she's definitely on what we delicately call "palliative care". As long as she's eating, drinking and cleaning herself, I'm willing to overlook that she occasionally misses one of her THREE litter boxes.
She is almost totally deaf, which has resulted in her not remembering how her own voice should sound. She makes some pretty non catlike noises. Anyway, since she's nearly deaf, if you touch her when she's sleeping, she jerks instantly awake. I always hate startling her, so tonight I gently jiggled the chair she was sleeping on to wake her and take her to her nighttime lair (which eliminates squishy surprises all over the house in the mornings and thus has extended her sweet life). Nothing. She didn't budge. So I petted her gently. No surprised leap out of sleep. She was warm and breathing. Just zonked out. I went downstairs and got her room ready and came back one last time, almost planning to just let her sleep in the living room. This time she jerked awake and stretched. Every time something new like this happens, I think, uh oh, is this "it"? Nope. She's totally messing with me.
