365 Project. Day 153, June 2: It looks like some hummingbirds are considering setting up a nest in the ficus tree by our front door. This has happened before, with varying degrees of success. A couple of hatchlings have made it up and out. Once, a nervous mom abandoned the nest when we had a garage sale and people were coming and going all morning. Another time, a nest full of eggs got catapulted across the driveway by an inept worker who clumsily moved the tree while preparing the house for termite treatment (I cried for days).
What's particularly meaningful about this is that this tree belonged to my mom. She loved hummingbirds, and I've always felt specially honored and responsible for helping these special little birds raise up their next generation of chicks. It always makes me nervous when they choose such a fragile and heavily trafficked area to nest. But if they do, I'll try my best to help foster them!
